It can't end like this...", Ash could do nothing but watch as the others were slaughtered, unable to do anything to anything...

... They were cornered. Only he and Bulbasaur were left standing. One of the invaders pulled out a flamethrower. "Nooo!" Ash leapt in front of the attack. "Bulbasaur, you've done enough. Return."
... And with Bulbasaur safe and sound, the final blow was struck. An axe to the back fell Ash for good. And so, the next day...]
... Pikachu! Calleo, Ema, Hol...
Bulbasaur! Is Bulbasaur okay!? [And he finds the Poké Ball safe and sound.]

You're okay. ... Where are the others?
[Just assume a phone was lying off the hook nearby or something?]
